Zinc: Nature's Barrier or Something Worse
Remember those first zinc sunscreens? Solid white creams that people would apply to their noses? Well, in its wisdom, the cosmetic industry decided that zinc –a safe and powerful sun protective ingredient–would be even better if it was invisible. So they invented the zinc “nano particle” and then went on to coat it so it could “blend.”
However, the zinc nano particle, a finely ground version of zinc oxide, was so small that it could penetrate through the skin layers and enter the body – a place where it was never meant to be. Studies clearly show that nano particles absorbed by the body are being bio-accumulated because the body doesn’t get rid of them, and they are hanging around in there, very likely causing problems. Studies tracking their effects are currently underway, and results will be published soon.
Matraea’s Use of Zinc
Matraea uses non-nano zinc oxide in small amounts (approximately 3%) in its better baby Bum Cream, where it provides an effective, safe, and protective barrier for your baby. It is combined with other certified organic ingredients like Shea butter, calendula and honey to soothe, comfort and protect the diaper area.
Here’s What We Know About Zinc Oxide & Nano-Particles
We’re happy to address your concerns or questions about zinc oxide and nano-particles. If you don’t see the answer you’re looking for here, please shoot us a quick note.
Zinc Oxide is a powdered mineral that is used in diaper creams, sunscreens and calamine lotion. It is a white powder that is formed naturally, and found in nature. (However, the zinc oxide that is used in cosmetic products is made as a nature-identical product in a lab.)
Zinc oxide is made up of large particles and when applied, it sits on the surface layers of the skin, where it takes out redness, heals and reflects light. It is an inert substance that causes no problems and is an excellent barrier. It’s earned it’s calming and healing reputation for many years in diaper creams, eczema creams and calamine lotion.
NOTE:
Zinc oxide powder is not safe to inhale, and aerosol products with zinc in them (like spray sun products) should be avoided.
So in a nutshell, non-nano zinc oxide is extremely safe to use externally; nano zinc oxide is not. Rest assured we know the difference!
