Warmland Women’s Support Services
Kendra Thomas, Society Coordinator
Warmland Women’s Support Services Society is a registered non-profit Sexual Assault Advocacy Centre in the Cowichan Valley serving adult survivors 18+ of all gender identities, LGBTQIA2S+ community and new Canadians. We support youth ages 13+ by consulting and creating a coordinated response with local youth serving agencies and/or school counsellors. Services include registered Crime Victim Assistance Program counselling, trauma recovery groups, and trauma-informed mindfulness programs emphasizing body-centered awareness. Our Sexual Assault Response Program (SARP) includes 24/7 crisis accompaniment to Cowichan District Hospital for the Sexual Assault Forensic Exam, response planning for next-step actions, emotional support, safety planning, and information on forensic procedures.
Advocates offer compassionate emotional support while providing in-person accompaniment for survivors of sexualized offences to attend crisis and non-crisis medical appointments, report an offence to RCMP, or attend court so that survivors are not alone during the aftermath of sexualized crime. Advocacy services are free and confidential.
Our Sexual Assault Advocacy Centre is a response to sexualized violence that reflects not only the needs of survivors but one that engages community to become more than a bystander. We offer an intensive volunteer Advocate training program. Screened Advocates complete 100+ hours of specialized training over the course of one year. Training is grounded in feminist theory with a trauma-informed client-centered approach exploring rape culture, gender-based violence, dominant culture and colonization, diversity, community engagement through social action, and coordination with criminal justice system partners.
